John Noble Wins Live EDGE

(February 6, 2008) CHICAGO — Newark and parent company Premier Farnell plc announced the winner of the 2007 Live EDGE Electronic Design for the Global Environment Challenge as John Noble from Malaysia. Noble designed a product called MyFan, a ceiling fan that combines an electronically commutated motor and controller with aerodynamically efficient blade design that reduces fan input power by up to 66% from traditional ceiling fans.

MyFan boasts auxiliary output channels that drive up to 20 W integrated LED lighting with up/down lighting modules. The motor construction is enclosed and available with an IP5x environmental rating. The judges noted that Noble demonstrated the best originality and innovation of the entered designs, the highest technical merit, a reduced effect on the global environment, best feasibility of design, efficient use of energy, innovative use of components, good cost optimization, a thorough design dossier, and excellent supporting documentation. Noble referred to the competition as a forum on sustainability for design engineers. He receives a prize package worth $100,000, including marketing and other resources to launch the product.

Five designs garnered honorable mentions: Thomas Reiter a student from Austria, submitted a miniature battery-saving switch-mode power supply; Minesh Bhakta from the U.K. designed an energy gauge that helps manage use of electrical sockets; Carlos Marques from Portugal, on behalf of his company ID-Mind, submitted a 3D SunTracker optimizing the effectiveness of solar panels; Dale Stepps from Fla., on behalf of his company Inteltech Corporation, designed a solid state luminare; and Alistair Macfarlane from Scotland designed a LED intelligent light. Each designer received a $5,000 prize.

Since its launch in May 2007, over 3,500 design engineers, students and academics from 102 countries registered for the competition. Winners were announced at the Live EDGE virtual awards ceremony and technical conference, a Web-based event. For more information, visit www.live-edge.com and www.newark.com.
