The SMTA China hosted its annual dinner at Nepcon China in Shanghai, with sponsorship from Kyzen and VJ Electronix; in Raleigh, N.C., SMTA hosted a symposium on advanced packaging technologies; and APICS — Association for Operations Management held a professional development meeting with EMS provider Inovar, also announcing a change in headquarters.

The 3D/SiP Symposium took place in April 28–30 Durham, N.C. Hosted by SMTA and co-sponsored by Advanced Packaging Magazine, the meeting turned out to be an intimate gathering of approximately 55 attendees representing not only the U.S., but Canada, France, Japan, Taiwan, U.K., Austria, and the Republic of Korea. The three-day event kicked off with a half-day workshop led by Lee Smith of Amkor Technology which covered "3D Packaging Applications, Requirements, Infrastructure and Technologies," and featured keynote presentations by Dongkai Shangguan, VP and senior fellow at Flextronics, and Judy Priest of Cisco Systems. Shangguan addressed the challenges in 3D/SiP packaging and assembly, focusing on supply chain demands due to shorter product life cycles. He said that players need to work together and develop solutions in parallel, and that a reconfiguring of the supply chain is in order. Accordingly, speakers from across the supply chain shared recent developments in their specific sectors developed with 3D processes in mind. www.smta.org

VJ Electronix was a silver sponsor of the event, noting that the less-structured environment was a valuable source of industry discussions. NBS Design Inc., also a silver sponsor, expressed support for the association. Kyzen Corporation was a gold sponsor of the event. Tom Forsythe, VP, Kyzen, praised SMTA China as a world-class training provider to the industry. www.smta.org/cn

APICS — Association for Operations Management completed its relocation from Alexandria, Va. to Chicago, citing a better location to serve its 43,000 members. Chicago's labor force boasts a large population of operations management and association professionals and represents a talent pool suited to serve APICS members, according to the group. APICS hosted an open house reception at the new corporate headquarters, including speeches by APICS board president Robert Vokurka and APICS CEO Abe Eshkenazi. The association also coordinated a professional development meeting and dinner in Salt Lake City with Inovar, an inthinc company, through its Salt Lake Chapter. The meeting focused on the shifting landscape of global outsourcing. Charlie Barnhart, author of The Global Pricing Methodology and the Outsourcing Navigator and private equity investor, provided an overview of the pricing, practices, and future direction of a fluctuating industry. www.apics.org
