PDR announced that it has seen a significant growth in sales of its Focused IR (FIR) rework systems from OEMs and EMS providers operating in the manufacture and repair of gaming consoles. The demand for products in this sector is linked to problems associated with implementing lead-free solder alloys in smaller and more complex assemblies. Advantages of the FIR technology include focused IR component heating without nozzles or tips, low cost of ownership, modular and upgradeable, temperatures control within 2°C of the target profile at all times, easy set-up, and 100% yields. It is crucial to control both component and PCB temperatures during rework, PDR notes. Designed to rework any SMD component that will pass through a reflow oven, Focused IR technology suits BGAs, microBGAs, CSPs, and flip chip devices that are difficult to reflow using soldering irons and hot gas systems, as well as for small components which can be blown off center by hot gas flows.
